Dice la nota: "William Gass' prose is a triathlon for readers.Parts seem easy. Just like riding a bike. But then it becomes hard-going, and those with untoned brain cells start wheezing, recognizing that they may not conquer the formidable hills. Or the incredible length. For many readers, it's too much: They don't even start. Yet Gass, 83, is universally recognized as an ironman of the literary world. He's the most esteemed writer living in St. Louis and one of the country's most respected writers — even if not one of the most read. On Wednesday, he will receive the St. Louis Literary Award, an annual event whose 39 previous honorees include Joan Didion, Richard Ford, Arthur Miller, Saul Bellow, David McCullough, Eudora Welty, T.S. Eliot and Tennessee Williams. Gass is only the second to receive it while living in St. Louis. (The other was his Washington University colleague, poet Howard Nemerov). The award always goes to a writer with a substantial body of work. That's Gass, says his longtime intellectual sparring partner Harold Bloom. Bloom calls him "a remarkable fusion of philosopher and fiction writer. He more than deserves the award."
