El futuro ya está aquí
Mientras estaba en Santiago de Chile, discutí en el auto con Andrea Jeftanovic sobre el futuro del libro (¿de qué más pueden hablar dos amigos que no se ven hace años luego de comprar tarjetas de Pokemon en el mall Parque Arauco?). Ella insistía en que el libro electrónico era una porquería y acariciaba un libro imaginario. Yo habalaba maravillas del Amazon Kindle y de la impresión por demanda y trataba de convencerla de que el futuro sería el único lugar donde nos libraríamos de todos los intermediarios: solo el lector y el libro futuro. Ella no me creyó, llegamos a su casa y bajó del auto dejándome con mi último argumento en la punta de la lengua. O más bien el penúltimo. El último es esta información aparecida en Paper Cuts:
Maxine Hong Kingston, who received the 2008 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters at the National Book Awards ceremony on Wednesday night, showed that even at 68 she could adapt to the changing publishing landscape. The National Book Foundation announced Kingston’s award in September. In her acceptance speech, she revealed that she tried to take advantage of “my fresh fame to write an article that would help Barack Obama get elected.” When the article was rejected by every newspaper she sent it to, she said, she decided to post it online. “All I had to do was type, then click a button marked publish. Yes, there is such a button. Click, publish. Voila, I was published,” she said. The response was instantaneous, she said. “They chose me to be their Facebook friend. I felt young again. All that rejection, then miraculous publication and making new friends all over the Worldwide Web.”
¿No es fantástico todo esto? A ver si ahora sí te convenzo que no le temas al futuro, Andrea. Cualquier cosa, seguimos discutiendo por el Facebook.

2:43 p. m.Tal vez el futuro permita librarse a algunos de los intermediarios, pero no sé, eso de que es algo incómodo es buen argumento. En fin, a esperar el futuro
