Moravia 100
Este 28 de noviembre se cumplirán 100 años del nacimiento del escritor italiano Alberto Moravia. Un centenario que espero que no pasar por alto en Moleskine Literario. Recuerdo claramente -y no es un recuerdo que me averguence, debo decir- que mi primer acercamiento a Alberto Moravia fue una entrevista al interior de PlayBoy (¿?) Sí, yo era un adolescente y cayó en mis manos una PlayBoy en la que entrevistaban a Moravia, quien hablaba de la masturbación, del amor, del pene (en una de sus novelas el pene es protagonista), etc. Y las cosas que dijo me impresionaron mucho. Conseguí una novela suya, La campesina, en aquellas inovidables ediciones café Obras Maestras del siglo XX y no me gustó. Pero el impacto de aquella entrevista fue tan grande que insistí con El Conformista, y esta vez sí la impresión fue buena. Luego he leído varias novelas suyas, todo lo que cae en mi mano (la genial El amor conyugal, La romana, El tedio, Los indiferentes, El hombre que mira, El desprecio, El amante rechazado) además de cuentos suyos y de la entrevista en The París Review, y debo aceptar que es para mí una enorme influencia hasta el punto que tiene un "cameo" en una novela mía, El viaje interior (que remite a La Vida interior, una de sus obras). Lamentablemente, el tiempo de Moravia parece haber pasado ya y no sé si los escritores más jóvenes lo leen o les interesa. Es sólo una etapa: sé que lo harán tarde o temprano. Quizá lo hagan ahora, que se celebran los 100 años. Se lo merece.
En la revista Il Velino, se preguntan la razón por la que Moravia no es tan recordado actualmente (literalmente, por qué bajó del "panteón de los consagrados"):
Celebrations for the centenary of the birth of Alberto Moravia (November 28 1907 – September 26 1990) have already begun and many more are planned throughout the country for the coming months. Yet in recent years the Roman novelist seems to have lost his claim to the title of most important Italian story-teller of the late 20th century, which had been attributed to him for almost 50 years. What is the reason for Moravia’s decline in the pantheon of contemporary Italian literature? Il VELINO put that question to a number of literary experts. The writer Raffaele La Capria attributes the causes to the expansion of the market for literature. “I dont’t think the reason for this decline lies in the greater or lesser topicality of what Moravia wrote. For me he remains one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. It is the continual search for novelty on the part of the public and publishers that has led to his eclipse. The competition now is all about new, young names imported from other literatures,” La Capria said. “As a result the literary market has been so enriched that it has left really major writers in the shade.”
